Thank God It’s Thursday – flashback

I often get asked questions about my own life but this is the first time a blogger has asked for ‘An Honest-to-God True Story’. As I’m nearly 60, there are so many crossroads and dramas in the treasure-chest (and locked cells) of my memory; personal moments of love, birth and death or small confessions (I am really really sorry, Annie, that you heard me making a smart-arsed comment about you behind your back, when we were 14). Finally, I decided that this was a moment worth sharing. And yes, you can spot which one is me in the photo.

I know the saying is ‘Thank God it’s Friday’ but for me it was always Thursday. I was Headteacher (Principal) for the last two years of a closing secondary school, Graig Comprehensive School in Llanelli, a Welsh industrial town. Not inner city but not ‘easy’ either. Parents who really care about their children’s education rarely choose a closing school, although some did, from loyalty to the school’s history. The majority of our intake was lower ability and from even lower home support. Then we no longer had any intake.
